EIN application

An EIN is your company’s tax ID from the IRS. Here is how the application works and how we help.

What an EIN is for

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit number issued by the IRS. Your company needs one to open a U.S. bank account, file taxes and hire employees.

No SSN? You can still apply.

You do not need a U.S. Social Security number (SSN) or ITIN to get an EIN. Without one, the application usually goes to the IRS by fax or phone rather than through the online form, which takes longer. The exact process follows the IRS’s rules at the time you apply.

The responsible party

The IRS asks you to name one individual who controls the company. This “responsible party” must be a person, not a company, and is usually the main owner.

What we need from you

  • The responsible party, and a phone number for them
  • The date the business started, if you know it
  • The closing month of your accounting year (most companies use December)
  • Whether you expect to hire employees in the next 12 months

All of this is on the intake form, with an explanation next to every field.

Your company’s tax classification is a decision for you and your accountant. We do not give tax advice.
